Birthday Holiday/ Personal Holiday
All Grocery, Deli, Bakery, and Non-Food Agreements
If you do not request your personal holiday and the calendar
year ends, you will lose the holiday! Do not let this happen to you!
As a result of the
recent 2007 grocery settlement, the birthday holiday was changed to
a personal holiday. In Pierce and Mason/Thurston Counties, you
should have already used your birthday holiday from 2007. If you
attempted to take your birthday holiday and were denied, you may
have a valid grievance. You should contact your Union Representative
immediately. For Grays Harbor, Lewis and Pacific County members, you
will have until the end of 2008 to take your birthday holiday.
Here is the new language for Pierce and Mason/Thurston Counties:
Effective January 1, 2008, employees with one (1) year of continuous
service with the Employer shall be entitled to a personal holiday.
By mutual agreement between the Employer and employee, the employee
may receive payment in lieu of such holiday in accordance with
Section 7.3. Employees shall give the Employer a thirty (30) day
notice prior to their personal holiday. The personal holiday shall
not be carried over into the next year.
Your Personal Holiday replaces the Birthday Holiday. The terms under
which you may take this holiday are different. Now, with the
Personal Holiday, you may take it anytime in the calendar year on a
date that is mutually agreeable between you and the Company, or you
may receive pay for the holiday and not take the time off, if the
Employer agrees to your request to do so. If you request your
personal holiday and are denied, make sure you keep good records of
who and when you have asked. If you are unable to take your personal
holiday because you have been continuously denied, then our position
is that you do not lose that personal holiday. You should not lose
your personal holiday at the end of one year simply because
management doesn’t want to grant or approve it. If you request a
personal holiday and are denied more than once, contact your
union representative immediately!

year ends, you will lose the holiday! Do not let this happen to you!
